He was raised in a Foreign Office family and was born in Nyasaland (now Malawi), Rhodesia, and Nyasaland. He received his education at Canterbury Cathedral as a senior chorister and later at Tonbridge School in Kent.
He received a choral scholarship to Clare College in Cambridge, where he studied under John Rutter and joined the Footlights, as well as an Exhibition in English Literature.
