Known professionally as Brian Donlevy, Waldo Brian Donlevy (February 9, 1901 – April 5, 1972) was an Irish-born American actor best known for portraying deadly tough characters in films and television shows from the 1930s through the 1960s. He was frequently cast as a supporting character in films. Beau Geste (1939) and The Great McGinty (1950) are two of his most well-known films (1940). A nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Beau Geste was made in recognition of his performance as Sergeant Markoff in the film. Donlevy featured as US special agent Steve Mitchell in the 1952 television series “Dangerous Assignment,” which aired 40 episodes. ‘The Commissioner,’ portrayed by Hubert Butterfield, sent Mitchell to exotic locations involving international intrigue, and Mitchell accepted the tasks.
